Legislative Hearing on Nursing Home Reform
Nov 16 1:15 PMOctober 22, in collaboration with Community Renewal Society, Illinois State Senator Jacqueline Collins held a subject matter hearing on nursing home care. The hearing--with the Illinois Senate Public Health Committee--addressed disparities between nursing homes with mostly African American populations and their counterparts with mostly white residents. The committee heard testimony from advocates, researchers, family members of nursing home patients, and journalists from The Chicago Reporter.
Community Renewal Society's Senior Action and Civic Action Networks began organizing around this issue earlier this year when an investigation by The Chicago Reporter found vast disparities in nursing home care. Senior Action leaders have engaged in direct action against the Alden Network of nursing homes, the largest owner in the Chicago area, calling for staffing equity.
At the CRS action at the Alden Wentworth and Alden Princeton homes in June, Senator Collins, along with State Representative Andre Thapedi and Alderman Freddrenna Lyle, entered the Wentworth home and attempted to speak with the administrator. The home called security and threw them out.
