How We Work

Community Renewal's staff of nationally-respected organizers and award-winning journalists possesses a unique and unmatched understanding of a variety of complex social issues.

Community Renewal provides investigative reports on issues of education, government, housing, criminal and social justice and economic conditions through its independent, award-winning publications:

  • The Chicago Reporter. The Reporter's investigations engage leaders and residents in critical issues—all with a unique focus on race and poverty.
  • Catalyst Chicago: Catalyst serves as a watchdog and resource, fueling efforts to ensure that Chicago's public schools serve all their children well.

The Civic Action Network, Community Renewal's organizing arm, gathers and analyzes both qualitative and quantitative data, disseminating its findings to the community and partner organizations.

Organizing communities and people is at the core of Community Renewal's commitment to justice.

  • The Community Renewal Society prepares and engages our constituency - 60 different faith congregations and over 5,000 individuals - to fully participate in and work for a just society.
  • The Community Renewal Society trains and mentors organizations and individuals to analyze and understand power structures so they can successfully design and implement public strategies that reflect their values and improve lives.

Community Renewal Society is committed to the transformation of individuals, organizations and public and private institutions. Read about our recent accomplishments.
