BLACK, BROWN AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN: BREAKING DOWN THE WALLS THAT DIVIDE
Power - getting it, keeping it, growing it - is at the heart of many of the splits between communities of color. On some level, various ethnic groups worry that if one group gains power - whether it is in the form of economic or social or political clout or some combination of the three - they will lose some piece of theirs. Which of these concerns are real? Which are media spin? "Black, Brown and Everything in Between" explores how people of color, indigenous and immigrant, can put aside differences to address shared concerns.
Confirmed panelists: Abel Muhammed, (Head of the Latino ministry for the Nation of Islam),
Prexy Nesbitt (an internationally known speaker on African issues, global education, US Foreign Policy and racism),

WHITE ALLIES: CONNECTING BEYOND RACE AND PLACE
Discussions around race, poverty and barriers to access and opportunity often focus primarily on the experiences of people of color living in urban areas. How can whites, from the city and suburbs, support and stand with people of color on these issues, even in environments where their presence is questioned and their sincerity doubted? What can informed and engaged whites do to reach out to others in their community? Is the term "white ally" - often used in the social justice arena - appropriate? This panel will touch on issues that span race and will examine how whites align themselves with issues and organizations, to create a more equitable society for all.
