HB4513 TANF Grant Increase

Since it was created by the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, the TANF program has been the central vehicle to distribute aid to struggling families. While created by Federal legislation, TANF is funded through a combination of State and Federal funds, and states have extensive flexibility in determining grant awards. It has been ten years since TANF has had a cost of living increase. For families struggling to make ends meet, this increase is long overdue. In Illinois, TANF funds are vital to many grandparents who find themselves caring for their grandchildren. The increase represented by HB4513 is vital as many grandparents and relative caregivers struggle to meet the financial challenges of raising the children in their care.
