Create a Partnership

Treat Them as Future Partners

Legislators will not always behave as you want them to, but by holding them accountable within the context of a relationship you increase the chances they will be an ally in the future.

  • Include your legislator in your organization’s newsletter or mailing list, and your personal mailing list.
  • Think of ways to publicly recognize your legislator for his or her contributions to our organization’s work in your area on a regular basis.
  • Invite your legislator to special events, such as the opening of a new program, a holiday celebration, or a tour of your facility.
  • If you ask around, you will probably find someone who knows the legislator and who could personally introduce you. Remember to utilize relationships!

    Saying "Thanks"
All legislators need to be thanked when they take action you support. Legislators rarely get written compliments – more often, they get deluged with complaints. So if your representative does something positive, even something small, send a thank-you letter.
