Ellen Ray

Ellen Ray joined the Community Renewal Society in the fall of 2005 as a social justice intern in Civic Action. She was hired as a full time Civic Action organizer in July of 2006. Prior to joining Community Renewal Society, Ellen worked extensively with pregnant and parenting homeless young women at New Moms and Thresholds’ Mothers Project. She also worked briefly with Protestants for the Common Good and ACORN as an intern. Ellen earned an A.M. with a specialization in community organizing, development and planning from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration (SSA). At SSA she was named a McCormick Tribune Fellow in the Program for Urban and Community Leadership. She also holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester in Anthropology.

A native of Chicago, Ellen has been involved in social change efforts most of her life and has a particular passion for engaging people of faith in building the beloved community through social justice action. She attends Kimball Avenue Church in Logan Square, where he father is the pastor. She is both a church board member and the facilitator of the church’s justice ministry, which creates opportunities for education and action on racial, social and economic justice issues. She has been responsible for developing faith-based curriculums, position statements, teach-ins, and action steps on key issues and frequently preaches.
