35 under 35 FAQs

Q: What is the goal of Community Renewal's 35 under 35?
A: Community Renewal Society's 35 under 35 highlights the importance of fresh voices in the fight to eliminate racism and poverty by recognizing emerging leaders. Together with these leaders, Community Renewal Society hopes to promote a dialogue about community leadership, one that bridges generational divides.

Q: Who is eligible to be nominated for the 35 under 35?
A: A nominee must be 35 years of age or younger on the date honorees are announced. In general, a nominee should be committed to eliminating race and class barriers. Nominees must be U.S. residents, living in the Chicago area and working on issues critical to the region. U.S. citizenship is not required. Nominees must have a minimum of three years experience working in the area for which they are being nominated. The work of nominees can vary: from community organizing to fundraising to social research, Community Renewal seeks to demonstrate that leadership comes in many forms, all of them valuable. Each year, there may or may not be more specific requirements that nominees must meet.

Q: Can I nominate myself or someone from my own organization?
A: Self-nominations are not accepted. However, nominations from a nominee's organization are accepted. Nominators must be able to attest to the qualifications of the nominee.

Q: Why does Community Renewal only recognize younger "emerging" leaders?
A: Young leaders are bringing about positive change in virtually every neighborhood in the city but, unlike older, more established leaders, many are not recognized outside of their immediate community. Honoring these young people will show that leadership is not generational and may also inspire other young people to believe that they too can play a role in the fight for social change.

Q: What if a nominee works extensively with more than one issue area?
A: If more than one issue area applies to the nominee, we ask that you identify a primary issue and list the other issues as secondary.

Q: Is a nominee eligible if s/he is well known and recognized in her/his community?
A: All nominees should have some level of recognition within their community or field. Community Renewal Society is looking for leaders who are well known and respected within their immediate community or field, but not with the general public.

Q: If a nominee has previously received a major leadership award are they eligible for the 35 under 35?
A: Because the 35 under 35 is targeted to leaders who are not recognized outside of their immediate community or field, if candidates have already participated in major leadership programs or received significant leadership awards, they are not eligible for nomination.

Q: Can a volunteer be nominated?
A: Yes, if s/he meets the outlined criteria.

Q: Can business and/or government leaders be nominated?
A: Business and/or government leaders can be nominated if they work with community members on a community problem.

Q: Are there eligibility requirements for nominators?
A: All nominators must be well acquainted with their nominee's experiences and characteristics, and be able to fully attest to her/his qualifications. Nominators should be available for any possible follow-up questions throughout the selection process (February - Apr). Nominations will not be accepted from the nominee's immediate family or from Community Renewal Society staff. Members of the Community Renewal Board of Directors and members of Community Renewal advisory councils, including the Associate Board, can submit nominations.

Q: Should a nominee and nominator collaborate on the nomination?
A: While collaboration is not required, Community Renewal Society encourages nominators to collaborate with nominees to produce a strong nomination.

Q: What happens if more than one nomination for a nominee is received?
A: Only one nomination per nominee will be considered. If more than person nominates a nominee, the nominee will be asked to choose which nomination goes forward.

Q: How are awardees selected?
A: Several factors are considered, including the critical nature of the social issue being addressed, the approach taken by the nominee addressing that problem and the impact of the nominee's work in that area.
