Kimbriell Kelly investigates issues of race and poverty as a staff writer for The Chicago Reporter magazine. Previously, Kelly worked as an adjunct professor at Roosevelt University while reporting for the Daily Herald newspaper in Arlington Heights, Ill., where she served as a founding member of its Diversity Committee.
Kelly’s research has appeared, or been the subject of articles, in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, the Chicago Defender, Utne magazine and on the local NBC affiliate and various radio stations, including the talk show of motivational speaker Les Brown.
She is the recipient of the 2004 Robert R. McCormick Tribune Minority Fellow in Urban Journalism, the 2006 Society of Professional Journalists, the Chicago Headline Club Peter Lisagor Award in business reporting and the 2006 Chicago Bar Association’s Herman Kogan Print Media Award of Merit in legal affairs reporting. Kelly was also awarded a 2005-06 Racial Justice Fellowship through the Institute for Justice and Journalism and was part of the staff honored with the national 2006 Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award through Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
