Before launching Catalyst Chicago in 1990, Lenz was the education writer for the Chicago Sun-Times and before that an editorial writer for the Chicago Daily News. She also was a political writer and columnist for Pioneer Press, North Shore. Lenz is a frequent guest on radio and television public affairs programs and has written op-ed pieces for newspapers and education journals. She has won journalism awards for reporting and editorial writing. She is a former president of the Education Writers Association, a national professional organization. She received a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Illinois at Urbana.
