Journalism of The Chicago Reporter enjoys outsized national and local recognition.
• EWA Award: The Chicago Reporter’s “Empty Schools, Empty Promises,” series is a finalist for the 2017 Education Writers Association’s national award for investigative reporting by a small news outlet. The series examines the aftermath of the 2013 Chicago Public School mass closings, which disrupted lower-income black communities.
• Lisagor nominations: The Reporter is a finalist for three of the Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Awards for Exemplary Journalism: Best Data Journalism, Best Graphics, and Best Online Business/Consumer Reporting.
• Spencer Education Reporting Fellowship: Our own Kalyn Belsha is one of four journalists awarded this prestigious fellowship. She’ll spend an academic year in New York City continuing her reporting on the out-migration of black students from cities like Chicago under the guidance of mentors at the Columbia Journalism School.
