The executive director of the Community Renewal Society, Reverend Curtiss DeYoung, recently gave this powerful sermon at a Christian Education conference. The event was sponsored by Rainbow PUSH and the International Sunday School Broadcast at the Trinity United Church of Christ.
In his sermon, Rev. DeYoung focuses on a central theme. He uses a verse from Hebrews 13:8 as a refrain, which reads “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” The Jesus of yesterday took on social issues: He ate with disreputable sinners, interacted with women, and advocated for the downtrodden of His time. He Himself was a poor and oppressed man in His society. However, sometime between the Jesus of yesterday and today, that image of Jesus changed into something different. Rev. DeYoung reminds us of three important points: Jesus is the same today as yesterday, He works in the same places on the same issues, and today’s Jesus meets us at our needs. Jesus is forever; He never changes and never fails.
