The legislation (SB 1381) that would have made Illinois the 16th state to legalize medical marijuana was called for a vote on January 7 and fell just two votes short of passage. Six new votes had been gained for the legislation since the bill was first considered on November 30; however three Democrats who had voted “yes” at that time switched to either “present” or “no.” One then asked for “reconsideration” and a second joined him. However, the session was adjourned with any further action even though 60 representatives who had earlier supported the bill were present in the chamber. Representative Lou Lang, the sponsor of SB 1381, has already filed a new bill for the General Assembly that to consider. We are grateful for the support that so many of you provided for the bill and look forward to our continued work together.
