A Leading Voice of Faith

In her “Sending Forth” at the close of PCG’s 15th anniversary celebration on November 6, PCG staff member Courtney Eccles offered these words:

“Please remember that advocacy, and this social justice work, are part of who we are as people of faith, as Christians. Just as worship and prayer, and giving, and volunteering shape our spiritual lives—so must advocacy for the common good.”

We ask for your year-end support so we may continue our education and advocacy work.

In the past year, PCG has been a leading faith voice in advocating successfully for:

  • an increase in the Illinois income tax to generate much-needed revenue for education, human service, health care, and public safety programs and to fund delinquent bill and pension payments. The bill lacks the tax fairness elements always supported by PCG, but represents the culmination of several years to increase revenues for Illinois-funded services and obligations.
  • the Environmental Justice Act, which created an Environmental Justice Commission under the office of the Governor to ensure that no segment of the population—regardless of race, national origin, age, or income— should bear disproportionately high or adverse effects of environmental pollution.
  • HB 298, which permits the sealing of records in cases where individuals (with no more than one prior offense) have been arrested but neither charged nor convicted. Currently, over 60% of those arrested for low-level drug offenses, predominantly African American, fall into this category. Their arrests make them virtually unemployable. Many are confined to Cook County jail for up to three weeks.

We have developed a new education program that addresses the threat to the common good posed by the huge disparity of income and wealth in this country. We are eager to bring this program to your churches in the coming months. Please contact our office to work with PCG staff on presenting this program to your congregation.

Our anniversary celebration has energized us for the work that still needs to be done if we are to follow the teachings of our Christian faith fully.

We seek your help now so that we are able to pursue our mission in the coming year. Please support the work of PCG by making a gift today.
