Donors Spotlight: Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Phillips

Community Renewal Society is fortunate to be blessed with many individuals who are supportive of both our mission and our work. These individuals are essential in ensuring Community Renewal Society’s ability to thrive and flourish, even in the hardest of economic times.  Creative donors have found exciting ways to provide for the future of CRS. One way of guaranteeing that their legacy is continued far into the future through planned giving.

Planned giving can be a bequest, adding CRS to a life insurance policy or a retirement account as a primary or contingent beneficiary, or creating a revocable living trust. Planned giving is a way to provide your legacy to CRS while receiving tax breaks for you or your heirs, either now or in the future. One of these wonderful people is Mrs. Elizabeth “Betty” Phillips.

Betty Phillips served on the Board of Directors of Community Renewal Society for over nine years and also served as Board President for two years.  Betty has served on both editorial boards of The Chicago Reporter and Catalyst Chicago , continues to serve on teh CRS Board’s Budget and Finance Committee, and has contributed numerous volunteer hours.  Betty and her late husband, John, have also been major financial supporters of Community Renewal Society and all of its programs for many years.

Betty states that “Community Renewal Society’s greatest contribution is the training given to community based organizations and churches on how to organize and be faithful to the communities they serve.”  Community Renewal Society is very grateful to Betty for her years of support and continued commitment to our mission.  Although there are many challenges ahead, with individuals such as Betty on our side our future looks brighter and our voice is stronger.  We all look forward to many more years of working
together for equality and justice.

We honored Betty and other people like her who have made a commitment to Community Renewal Society  through their estate plan by placing their names prominently in our reception area in a ceremony on  January 29th, 2009.
