Devotion in Celebration of the People's Ordinance (ECPS) Passing

by Rev. Karen Mooney, Executive Co-Director - Unitarian Universalist Advocacy Network of IL

Let the people say Amen.
Do not stand for the tepid heads down OK.
Do not whisper a "well maybe next time."
Do not let your heart shrink to the Amen that follows with the anxious fear of unknowing.
Today shout Amen (- Amen)
Today dance Amen in your homes (- Amen)
Today sing Amen from the rooftops (– Amen)
Today erupt Amen on the streets (- Amen)
Today let Amen be our cloak and staff (– Amen)
Let Amen be the compass of your path (– Amen)
Let Amen be the gratitude in your heart (– Amen)
Let Amen be the guide for all that will unfold (- Amen)

Let the people say Amen.
Because sometimes – so be it – is the only thing that can be uttered in response to an event.
Today Chicago police will be guided, motivated and judged by the people they serve. (- Amen)

Let the people say Amen.
As we hold in veneration those who worked faithfully for what is possible today, (- Amen)
As we recall those who shattered lives demanded unimpeded devotion
from their broken bodies,
with their traumatized spirits,
from their empty chairs,
Let them hear our Amen as a witness of remembrance. You too are here with us in this celebration (- Amen)

Let the people say a bold Amen.
Hear this - We will remain vigilant as this new way begins, vigilant as the way is formed, vigilant ensuring the intent is honored.
Let the people say Amen and let it be so.
