The U.S. Congress has declared October 14 “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.” They rushed to honor a man who said America was better before the Civil Rights Act. The irony is sharp: October 14 is also George Floyd’s birthday—a reminder of who this nation chooses to remember, and who it erases.
On October 14, CRS will gather instead to honor our people: George Floyd, Wadee AlFayoumi, Sonya Massey, Demartravion “Trey” Reed, Silverio Villegas González, and countless others lost to state violence here in Chicago, across the U.S., and in places like Palestine, Congo, and Sudan.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have terrorized families on Chicago’s South Side, ripping loved ones from their homes. In moments like this, memory must be our resistance, and solidarity our shield. Now more than ever, we need racial and religious solidarity—Black, Brown, immigrant, Jewish, Muslim, Christian—to defend one another and remind each other of our greatest power: our people.
Join us for a night of remembrance through music, community panels, and faith leaders speaking to the urgent call for solidarity. Please check out the event flyer above for more details.
