New Editor-In-Chief And Publisher For The Chicago Reporter

Dear Friend,

We are pleased to announce that Fernando Diaz is the new editor-in-chief and publisher for The Chicago Reporter. I am excited to welcome Fernando back to the Reporter. His innovation in using a variety of digital mediums to present compelling stories promises to take the publication’s already excellent work to the next level.

Mr. Diaz is an award-winning digital editor, newsroom leader, and former investigative reporter. Most recently, he was the managing editor of digital at the San Francisco Chronicle, where he helped transform the legacy publication into a multi-platform newsroom. At the Chronicle, he launched a podcast network, built a live-streaming video studio and content strategy and led a project to reengineer the organization’s publishing process.

Previously, he was a senior editor for Reveal, from the Center for Investigative Reporting, a national non-profit investigative newsroom, where he edited data-driven, multi-platform investigations into missing persons cases, sexual abuse, workplace safety, and racial discrimination by temp worker agencies.

“It has been an honor to work for and with the fine journalists at the San Francisco Chronicle and learn from the team at Reveal,” said Diaz, “I’m excited about the opportunity to deepen the Reporter’s commitment to the Chicago community and develop the next generation of investigative journalists.”

This will be a homecoming for Fernando, who spent most of his career in the Chicago area, including two years at The Chicago Reporter. He also worked at the Daily Herald, the ChiTown Daily NewsChicago Now and for four years was the managing editor of Hoy, the Chicago Tribune's Spanish-language daily. He also served as president of the Chicago Headline Club, the Chicago chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists.

His journalism career started with an internship at the Reporter while he pursued his undergraduate degree at Columbia College Chicago. He will start at the Reporter on November 19.
